The Spark!

THE START

It all started with a simple question:

Why is it so hard for performing artists to find local gigs?

As someone who often saw talented friends struggling for opportunities, I wanted to understand what lay behind the scenes of the Indian performance industry.

That question led us into a deeper inquiry about the broken system of talent discovery that connects artists and clients.

As someone who often saw talented friends struggling for opportunities, I wanted to understand what lay behind the scenes of the Indian performance industry.

That question led us into a deeper inquiry about the broken system of talent discovery that connects artists and clients.

Why Now? Why This?

THE WHY

India’s live performance industry is growing fastvalued at over $5.2 billion and fueled by a boom in cafes, indie venues, and digital-first creative professionals. Despite the momentum, artists still struggle to find reliable work, and clients are stuck navigating social media noise. This growing mismatch felt like the perfect moment to intervene with thoughtful design!

The Problem

Despite the booming market, there's no organized way for artists and clients to discover each other. This wasn’t just inefficient—it was exhausting and unfair. Everyone was trying to connect, but no one had the right tools.

Upcoming artists

rely on word-of-mouth or inconsistent referrals to get a gig opportunity.

Clients

spent hours searching for artists on social media, only to end up with mismatches.

Negotiations are often made over calls with no contracts or security, increasing insecurity.

Onboarding with Intention

We knew onboarding wasn’t just a quick formality, it was our first chance to earn trust. Artists were stepping into a platform that claimed to understand them, and the first few screens needed to prove it.

Artist's

flow

From the very first steps, the onboarding flow helped artists shape their own narrative. By selecting their niche, inputting tags, and uploading tailored content, they were curating how they wanted to be discovered.

Their inputs dynamically built their profile, which influenced the kind of gigs they were matched with.

And because profiles were editable at any point, artists could evolve their presence as their craft evolved. It wasn’t a one-size-fits-all experience, it was a tool to grow with them, on their terms.

Pivot —

During conceptualization we were contemplating a Tinder-style swipe interface to make artist-client matching feel fast and engaging. But! we realised that Artists wanted to track gigs, not swipe past them. Clients wanted to filter and shortlist, not rely on chance.

-That led us to prioritize structured navigation over novelty!

-We leaned into clean dashboards, logical groupings, and clearly segmented flows.

-Instead of delight through surprise, we designed for confidence through predictability.

Journey of Client posting a gig

Letting clients quickly define what they're looking for

Smart suggestions that adapt to their needs

Gig posting flow that’s fast, flexible, and frictionless

Mistakes that made it better

INTERVENTION

RESULT

Prior, only 20% of users could successfully complete the task. After changes, it rose to 87%.

Added scheduled gigs on the profile page for a more intuitive flow aligning with their existing mental model.

RESULT

100% of users could now go to upcoming gigs

INTERVENTION

Incorporated a clear hierarchy on the card, ensuring that the rating and budget information are prominently displayed and easily accessible to users.

RESULT

Reduced unnecessary taps and confusion; improved discoverability.

INTERVENTION

Artists couldn’t find their previously booked gigs.

Introduced a prominent CTA with a success notification.

The gig review page lacked a clear call to action.

Ratings and budgets were buried inside cards.

The Platform Dilemma

One major concern we uncovered was when we realised that even though we offered in-app calls and video calls, clients could still bypass the safeguards we’d built in and contact the artist away from the app, which would harm the revenue streams gained from the app.

This led us to think beyond features and into business model integrity. We looked at future iterations could explore escrow payments, verified-only contact, monitoring the chat to reduce leakage so that users continue being on the app through the complete gig cycle.

This led us to think beyond features and into business model integrity. We looked at future iterations could explore escrow payments, verified-only contact, monitoring the chat to reduce leakage so that users continue being on the app through the complete gig cycle.

Key takeaways

Artists needed control over how they were presented, while clients valued speed and clarity. Balancing both proved extremely crucial, with designing adaptable flows that worked for different priorities.

The journey is never linear, testing our own assumptions, and scrapping what didn’t serve the core needs of the stakeholder, was a step closer to building something that truly mattered to them.

Each pivot reinforced my belief that great design isn’t about grand gestures, it’s about small, thoughtful decisions that build trust and deliver real value.
